Skilljar xAPI and cmi5 guide for Honen courses

Export a Honen cmi5 ZIP and test it as a Skilljar lesson when your training site needs cmi5 reporting. Honen works with Skilljar through SCORM, cmi5, or a separate launch-only LTI path. Skilljar's package support is for the cmi5 profile; do not treat it as universal xAPI-package support.

SCORM, cmi5, and xAPI in plain words

Illustration: LMS results, Honen learning detail, and optional LRS records serve different reporting needs.
  • SCORM packages launch a course and report through the learner's browser while it is open.
  • xAPI describes learning events as statements. A separate learning record store can receive them.
  • cmi5 adds launch and reporting rules to xAPI so an LMS can run a compatible package.

Skilljar says it supports cmi5-compliant packages as lessons and can track completion, score, and progress. A general xAPI statement stream is not the same as a cmi5 lesson import.

Prepare the Honen package

  1. Publish and review the course in Honen.
  2. Export a cmi5 package from the organization workspace.
  3. Keep the ZIP intact.
  4. Record the package settings and course version for the test.

Honen's thin cmi5 package is designed to launch a live course and create a record for the learner. It sends the cmi5 statements to the LMS's LRS. Honen also keeps its own events. Test the launch and statement sequence in your Skilljar tenant.

A content edit in Honen can appear without a new ZIP after a successful tenant test. A package configuration change may need a fresh export. Learners need network access to Honen.

Upload and test in Skilljar

Skilljar's cmi5 help page says an administrator can create a new lesson, choose SCORM/Web Package, upload the ZIP, then save and publish changes. Use a test site or test course first. Launch as a learner and inspect the resulting lesson status, score, and progress. Confirm that exit and resume behave as your policy requires.

Skilljar also documents its own content syndication launch types. That is a separate workflow for distributing Skilljar content to other systems; it is not needed to import a Honen cmi5 ZIP.

Keep source material precise

Write one action per step and one term for each item. Use short sentences in active voice. Honen can help draft and review this controlled-language style, informed by ASD-STE100. A qualified editor must check the approved dictionary, rules, and domain vocabulary. Neither a cmi5 statement nor a course score proves writing conformity.
