About this course

Most people who have been hurt by religion do not describe it as trauma. They describe it as confusion, shame, a feeling that God is angry with them, or a bone-deep sense that something is wrong with them that prayer has not fixed. What is actually happening in those cases is that the nervous system and the soul are both carrying damage. Treating one without the other tends to leave people stuck. This course walks through what spiritual trauma is, where it comes from, and what it does to the brain and the body. You will learn how religious abuse, legalism, and spiritual manipulation shape a person's view of God and self in ways that go beyond belief. You will also get a working understanding of the neuroscience behind trauma: how the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex are involved, and why practices like breath prayer and scripture-based reframing are spiritually meaningful and neurologically active. By week six, you will be able to sit with someone in spiritual crisis and know what to do. That means recognizing crisis warning signs, applying a structured intervention protocol, building a spiritual safety plan tailored to a person's specific faith-related triggers, and communicating in ways that validate without overstepping. The course is built around the Bethel Bethesda Institute's integrated framework, which treats the person as a whole: spirit, mind, and body, not as a theological problem to be solved or a clinical diagnosis to be managed.
