About this course

Most people know that SpaceShipOne won a prize for reaching space twice in two weeks. Fewer know it took eight years just to fund the purse, or that a family of Iranian-American telecom entrepreneurs rescued the whole thing in 2001. The story of the X Prize is not really about rockets. It is about what happens when you stop asking governments to solve hard problems and start asking anyone who thinks they can. This course follows the X Prize from its origins in a 1994 reading of a Lindbergh biography through the October 4, 2004 win, and then into the decade that followed: prizes for cars that could hit 100 mpg, for genome sequencing, for cleaning up oil spills, and for landing a rover on the Moon. Some of those produced real results. Others expired unclaimed. The Google Lunar X Prize offered $30 million and ran for eleven years before closing in 2018 with no winner. Understanding why teaches you something the foundation's press releases do not. The final unit steps back and asks what the peer-reviewed research actually shows about whether prizes cause innovation, what the critiques are, and what SpaceShipOne's twenty-year record tells us when you look honestly at it. It ends with the $100 million Carbon Removal prize, which Elon Musk's foundation funded in 2021 and which produced a winner in April 2025. By the end, you will have a clear picture of what this model does well, where it falls short, and how it is being applied to climate technology right now.
